Profs. Kim Sherman, Mindy Magyar, Bruce Leonard: Senior Capstone
The ID Senior Capstone is a two-semester self-directed design project. The full-year Capstone project offers an opportunity for in-depth exploration of various aspects of industrial design, as well as the chance to develop skills of interest to the student (and potential employers). The problem definition, research, creative development, sketch, rendering, CAD, presentation, and project management are each critical elements of the design equation. By the end of second semester, the project will have a substantially well developed deliverable that demonstrates professional-level work.
Prof. Dan Harel: Senior Studio 1 Topic: Portable Medical Devices
Senior ID students have visited Rochester General Hospital to review anesthesia machine, sterilization and operating room lights, so that they may be designed for travel by Dr. Shikowitz and his team of surgeons for missions around the world. Designs will be worked on that focus on function and portability.
Prof. Alex Lobos: Senior Studio 1 Topic: GE & RIT-ID Explore Sustainable Appliances
This Fall semester RIT-ID is working on an exciting project with GE Appliances that looks at improving product lifecycle and promoting sustainable behavior within home appliances. GE’s designer Ryan Diener visited campus to kick off the project along with Prof. Alex Lobos. Students received the design brief and got to unpack a line of GE products that will live in the studio for this project and beyond. The project, which focuses on the processes of refrigeration and laundry, will be worked on throughout the entire semester.
Prof. Josh Owen: Senior Studio 1 Topic: Metaproject 05
The Metaproject initiative from RIT is now running in its fifth iteration pairing students with globally visible, design-oriented brands in a real-world competition. With the intent of commercialization and exhibition of the student works in mind, Owen and the students design and curate an exhibition and publish a book to disseminate the course output for one of world’s most vital design events: Designweek and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC. Students work directly with the artifacts, process and philosophy found on RIT’s campus in the Vignelli Center for Design Studies Archive, learning lessons relative to timeless modernist ideologies. Metaproject 05 is a collaboration with Kikkerland and Bed Bath and Beyond.
